This coming Sunday 8 June, the classic serial on BBC Radio 4 at 3.00pm is…The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.

This is a new dramatisation of the classic book by Robert Tressell and will be broadcast, I guess, in 3 parts over the next few weeks.

It is repeated on Saturday night and can also be listened to online via the BBC iPlayer – just go to the radio 4 page on the bbc website to do this – with each episode being available on demand to stream for the seven days after transmission.

This book is one of the great classics of trade unionism which has inspired activists down the years… so well done to the BBC for commissioning a new dramatisation.

However, it should also be noted that many of the conditions described in the book seem to be on the way back if not already here – who says trade unions are not relevant today?
